Adding an alarm system to the trailer

This was something I installed in my camper back in 2013, to add a little more security for those few moments we step away from the trailer with all of our stuff in it. We’ve got a lot of valuables with us, like our cameras and computers for a start. I don’t believe it protects us all that much in a lot of situations, but it does at least provide SOME extra protection. I’ve got the outside storage bins tied into the alarm, and just bought a few more sensors to alarm the propane doors, this spring I’ll wire them up. We sleep with the alarm on so if someone is messing around in our storage bins at night it will definitely wake us up!

The alarm and associated relays are installed in this box. The 4 switches are for power, ignition on simulation, enable/disable siren and field disturbance detector. The valet switch was supplied by Viper.
The remote key fob. I lost this for a while and the replacement would have been really expensive.

It’s a Viper 3305V pager car alarm system I put in. I bought one of the those plastic electronics boxes and stuffed all the wiring and relays in the box (pics coming). From there I had to pull a wire and put a magnetic sensor at each door, including the battery box door. It’s also connected to the trailer lights to flash them too. And the siren I put in a secret location that hopefully is not too easy to disable. In the camper I had the dome light circuit hooked up to the interior lights so they would come on when the alarm was disarmed, but not sure if I want to go through the hassle of pulling the wires to do that in the trailer.

OK so at first we did things like come back to the truck after a hike and then drive away with the alarm still on. The alarm is not wired into the truck in any way. The built in shock sensor of course, triggered the alarm while we were driving – oops. Then trying to disarm it while driving didn’t work so well so I usually had to pull over. Lesson learned after a few times.

Given that I put the alarm system together back in 2013 I don’t have many details of exactly how I put it together. I do recall it was a fun project, considering I had never installed a car alarm before. Moving it to the trailer was easy, except for pulling the door sensor wiring through. And of course, I had to provide power to the box and find a suitable location for it (that’s a secret, of course). All the storage locker, battery storage and propane doors are alarmed as well.
