What’s in my backpack 2022
I’ve put together this post to document what was in backpack for my summer of 2022 backpacking trips, of which there was only one haha. A lot of the gear was older from when I was backpacking from the early 2000’s through till 2013. In 2013 I bought an Osprey Xenith 88 pack and only used it once. For my tent I was going to use my old North Face 2-man tent that I bought for the West Coast Trail in 2007. But it turns out that modern tents don’t last forever, the seam seals had all flaked off and the tent would definitely leak badly. So I bought a new 1-man North Face Stormbreak tent with the credits that North Face gave me when I contacted them about the failed tent. And I also bought a new mattress that’s fairly heavy but sooo comfortable.
For 2023 I am going to review everything in my pack and try and cut at least 10 lbs off my pack weight. As of this writing I have just bought a new down sleeping bag, new Patagonia Torrentshell 3L rain jacket, and a down puffy jacket. I’m going to buy a MSR pocket rocket stove, Hydroblu water filter and a titanium pot. And hopefully as you’ll see in the video do a better job of food planning. Once I get this all figured out and have all the new stuff, I’ll show them all in a new video. Some of the big weight savings don’t cost that much money but others like the down sleeping bag and down puffy jacket cost a lot more. The Osprey pack is just over 5.5 lbs, I could also save almost 3 lbs by getting a lighter smaller pack – if everything fits! Once I figure that out, I can decide about a new pack, probably another Osprey like the Exo 48 / 58 or the REI Flash 55.
You can see everything I brought in this video:
